What does a 1% decrease in screen reflectivity mean? The quantitative value of AR coating
Guide
A reflectivity of 4% to 0.5% means that the specular reflection light superimposed in the dark areas is reduced by approximately 88%, and the "grayish feeling" under strong light and the reflection of the lamp are significantly alleviated as a result.
01. Arithmetic of reflectance
The surface reflectivity of ordinary screen glass is approximately 4%. When ambient light shines on the screen at a level of 500 nits, the dark areas of the picture will be superimposed with about 20 nits of reflected background color - the "pure black" of OLED is smeared gray by this background color. Soaking in the solution AR (about 3%) has limited improvement, while magnetron sputtering (≤ 0.5%) reduces the base color to within 2.5 nits.
In other words, from 4% to 0.5%, the dark reflection base color decreases by approximately 88% - this is an improvement of orders of magnitude, not a percentage game.
02. Impact on Effective Contrast
Effective contrast ratio = (screen brightness + reflected light)/(Dark area brightness + reflected light). The smaller the reflected light, the more the true contrast displayed on the screen can be "fulfilled". This is also the same reason why AR coating is being used for camera lenses, spectacle lenses and high-end displays.
The reverse approach is to increase the brightness to counteract reflection - consuming more power, generating more heat, and being dazzling at night, which is a poor strategy.
03. Correspondence at the sensory level
The three most intuitive sensations for users: The window shadow on the screen fades when working by the window; When looking at the phone with the lights off at night, the reflection of myself disappears. The "gray background" in the game's dark scenes disappears and the black areas become darker. Behind all three lies the same reflectance index.
It should be honestly marked that: The reflectivity of Guanfudun ≤ 0.5% is self-tested in the brand's laboratory standard environment, while the light transmittance and haze are measured by SGS. Both sets of data sources are separately marked on the official website.
